“Voltron” was an immediate hit upon release in the States, and has since enjoyed a cult following for decades. The Nickelodeon branch NickToon rebooted the series in 2011 with Netflix doing the same in 2016. “Voltron” is also one of the most popularly marketed animated series from the 1980s, with many playground fist fights taking place over who got to control the Blazing Sword attachment to the Voltron toys. Hollywood has been trying to make a live-action “Voltron” film as early as the 2000s, but all have failed — until now.
Thurber is currently on a hot streak, with “Red Notice” serving as the biggest Netflix original movie of all time. The streamer has already planned additional “Red Notice” sequels, but if “Voltron” gets the go-ahead, it will more than likely be Thurber’s next project. The report from THR suggests that “Voltron” could find its studio home as early as next week, but no official deals have been made at this time.

Interestingly enough, this “Voltron” film doesn’t seem to be related to the previously attempted film from Universal and DreamWorks Animation from “X-Men” screenwriter David Hayter. According to THR, the new live-action package apparently started making the studio rounds two weeks ago with Thurber attached and up-and-coming screenwriter Ellen Shanman set to co-write the script with him. Todd Lieberman and David Hoberman have also signed on to produce the film along with Bob Koplar, who still controls the “Voltron” property.
