Coming off the massive success of the Oscar-winning “Erin Brockovich” and the commercial juggernaut of “Ocean’s Eleven,” the director used his newfound clout to lure both Julia Roberts and, briefly, Brad Pitt, into one of the most wretched-looking films of his career. Honorable Mention: The Funhouse Universal Studios Tobe Hooper’s “The Funhouse” is a closer cousin to “Massacre” than most of the actual “Massacre” sequels and their impressionists. Looking to cash in on the craze he started, Universal enlisted Hooper to ordain their own low-budget slasher series. He thumbed his nose at that idea with a Carpenter riff in the first scene, then made something else entirely. In “The Funhouse,” the misfit family is on the defensive....
