Upcoming Comedy Movies To Keep On Your Radar

We could all use a laugh, and Hollywood’s slate of upcoming comedy movies is set to deliver some great ones. From the one reality TV reunion we actually want to see, to a movie where Nicolas Cage straight-up plays himself, there’s a comedy for everyone coming up in the near future. Among the highly anticipated sequels and adaptations on this list, there are also some utterly unique original ideas that we hope will connect with audiences, paving the way for studios to greenlight more original comedies.
Of course, as is the new normal, the theatrical release calendar is perpetually in flux. When the industry powers-that-be have to make tough decisions, comedies seem to be moved more often than tentpole flicks, as evidenced by two titles on this list, “Jackass Forever” and “The Bob’s Burgers Movie,” that have already been delayed several times. We don’t know exactly what 2022 will bring, but here’s our most up-to-date information about the comedies worth looking forward to in the new year.
The Lost City

Adventure romance author Loretta Sage (Sandra Bullock) isn’t known for leading the most exciting life, but everything changes when she’s kidnapped by a billionaire (Daniel Radcliffe) who thinks her books hide the key to finding a real-life lost city. Enter Alan (Channing Tatum), the Fabio-like cover model for Loretta’s books who wants to prove he’s more than a pretty face by rescuing her.
“The Lost City” has one of the funniest trailers I’ve seen in ages. Loretta and Alan’s jungle-set hijinks are hilariously uncomfortable, whether he’s nudging her rear with his head to help her up a cliff or freaking out about leeches that are sucking on him “like a big ole Jamba Juice.” The movie already has a lot going for it, but a surprise cameo by Brad Pitt as an experienced and handsome adventurer — his dad was a weatherman, he explains — pushes this film into can’t-miss territory. “The Lost City” is set to open in theaters March 25, 2022.
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent

Nicolas Cage is known for taking on roles that push the limits, but in the new movie “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent,” he’s one-upping himself even more than usual by playing himself. That’s right: as the trailer says, “Nicolas Cage is Nick Cage.” Though the footage we’ve seen doesn’t exactly tell us much, the film’s official synopsis says that it centers around a fan forcing Cage to run through all of his most famous characters for a birthday party. The meta levels here are off the charts, and we’re so ready for it.
As the trailer shows, Cage owes his landlord $600,000, causing him to pursue some strange career opportunities, including the aforementioned gig at a wealthy fan’s home. We see Cage call a wax figure of himself “grotesque,” and a drugged-up Cage dramatically trying to help Pedro Pascal’s character over a stone barrier that actually has an entrance point two feet away. The movie looks funny and bizarre, and we’re ready to see Cage go all-out in what some might call the role of a lifetime. Cage stars alongside Tiffany Haddish, Neil Patrick Harris, Ike Barinholtz, and Pedro Pascal. “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” is set to open in theaters April 22, 2022.
Legally Blonde 3

Despite being perhaps the most-anticipated comedy on this list, “Legally Blonde 3” is also the film we know the least about. We’re still waiting on a first trailer or even a poster, but the return of Elle Woods is worth the wait.
We do know actress and producer Mindy Kaling and “Brooklyn 99” co-creator Dan Goor wrote the script, with Reese Witherspoon producing. According to IMDb, Witherspoon is also set to return as Woods, the confident, pink-loving lawyer whose sense of fashion saved the day in the hit 2001 movie. Jennifer Coolidge, whose manicurist character Paulette stole scenes in the original, will be back for this film as well, per IMDb. Though “Legally Blonde 3” originally announced a May 2022 release date, the United Artists website indicates the movie will not be released until 2023.

Bob’s Burgers: The Movie
Series creator Loren Bouchard has promised that the movie will be an all-out extravaganza, saying it will “fill every inch of the screen with the colors and the sounds and the ever so slightly greasy texture of the world of Bob’s.” The full cast of the series is set to return for the movie, which is billed as a musical comedy.
